Why Genealogy?

An Introduction to Genealogy and Why It Matters

Genealogy is the study of family history, a journey that connects us to the generations that came before. It’s more than just building a family tree—genealogy is about discovering the stories, traditions, and legacies that shaped who we are today. By exploring the lives of our ancestors, we gain insight into their struggles, triumphs, quirks, strengths, weaknesses, and the historical events that influenced their world.

But why does genealogy matter?

  • It Preserves History: Each ancestor’s story is a piece of the puzzle that forms our collective history. Genealogy helps us ensure these stories are not lost.
  • It Fosters Connection: Learning about shared roots can deepen our relationships with family members and even connect us with long-lost relatives.
  • It Offers Identity: Exploring your ancestry helps answer the timeless question, “Where do I come from?” Understanding your roots can give you a sense of belonging and pride.
  • It Teaches Resilience: Tracing the lives of those who came before us reveals their strength and determination, offering lessons and inspiration for our own lives.

Genealogy is a way to honor the past while building a legacy for future generations. Each record we uncover, photo we preserve, or story we share creates a bridge between yesterday, today, and tomorrow. So, whether you’re just starting or have been researching for years, the journey is worth every discovery.

I've been involved in genealogy research since I was 14 years old. I was introduced to it by my mother, who used to take me to the Family History Library with her during my summers off from school. I had an immediate love of filling in pedigree charts and family group sheets. :-)
